Baroque: A Period of The Fusion of Art and Science

Baroque refers to an artistic style in art, music, and architecture from the 17th to 18th centuries after the Renaissance. The Baroque era was the most prosperous period for culture and art that stimulated emotions based on the understanding of human emotions as human abilities took precedence. The most notable artists of music are Vivaldi, Handel, and Bach, Rembrandt and Rubens in art, Shakespeare in literature, and the Palace of Versailles in France in architecture.

The cause of this change in the era was due to the disappearance of religionism and the resulting retraint that had ben present since the Middle Ages. At that era, there was a line of discoveries and inventions that completely shook human values, such as the discovery of the American continent by Colombus in the 15th century (1492), the heliocentric theory of Copernicus in the 16th century, and the theory of gravity by Isaac Newton (1687).  The outbreak of the Black Death in the 14th century was an especially important turning point that caused the change as people started to think that 'maybe there is no God' as a third of the entire European population was wiped out due to the pandemic.

With this historical background, scientists, from the Renaissance in the 16th century, began to accept the universe and nature as subjects of scientific inquiry rather than spiritual phenomena. In the 17th century, such research was accelerated, and the veil of mysticism overlaid on nature was unveiled, and the development of science naturally led to the development of culture and art.

Along with the development of free trade, navigation developed, and as navigation developed, the concept of studying abroad came about, and the demand for local landscape paintings to record their study abroad experiences increased dramatically. As a result, professional artists appeared, the first gallery concept was born, and as a result, the art market was formed. In addition, due to the development of navigation technology, a need to produce documents that are important to preserve, such as maps and contracts arose leading to the development of printing technology, and as printing technology developed, books, or literature, developed. The growth of literature soon led to a boom in the theater market, which promoted the public's consumption of music and other visual arts.

Such radical development of science has flowed in the direction of history in enriching human life or enabling aesthetic experiences, and the technology loved by humans has continuously developed in line with the times. Most notably, during the era of free trade, fter John Glent, a British social statistician, attempted to analyze the first statistical data in 1863, Richard Miller Devens coined the term "business intelligence" in 1865 and developed it which has since evolved 500 years later to what we call business data today.

The Baroque era after the pandemic is similar to today. The pandemic has increased demand for remote technologies at a faster rate than expected, and interest in technologies that can replace humans, including AI, has increased.

However, as seen throughout history thus far, human-focused or technologies loved by humans have been chosen and developed as well as developing technologies at the top of the creative realm of humans while developing, selecting, utilizing, reproducing, and deciding whether to discard them. As a result, we can confirm that there is sustainability in technology for humans throughout history.

Inheriting the spirit of the baroque, the era of human beings born on the basis of the rapid development of science and technology, while being the era with characterized by the most glamorous art form, IMJ FOUNDATION prepares for a new baroque era aiming to ensure human creativity based on relationships between humans and delivering this in an aesthetic way to establish a more sustainable direction of technological development through technological humanism.

Baroque Fruit

As free trade flourished, especially in the Netherlands, there were artists who professionally painted and sold paintings. In the 17th century Baroque era, independence from Spain and the development of maritime trade marked the golden age, and various genres of artworks were produced in art in accordance with the confidence of the era and to meet the needs of the wealthy bourgeois and ordinary citizens. In particular, still life paintings (vanitas) and portrait genre paintings developed. Genre art did not simply depict the daily lives of ordinary people, but  always contained warnings or moral stories hidden in them that encourage hard work, moderation, or moral life as Calvinism, which emphasized diligence sincerity, and moral life by insisting on the 'vocational theory' had a great influence after the reformation. This signifies the development of human philosophy, and is the result of an interpretation of human existentialism rather than a religious interpretation.

Fruits were often drawn together with skeletons, signifying the frailty of life, implying a ‘Memento Mori’ or a “remember your death.” Conversely, portraits of humans holding fruits or fruit baskets were often drawn, which meant to emphasize human sensual beauty or richness.

As such, fruits in the Baroque era was a food familiar to people, an artistic inspiration, a medium for philosophical questions about human existence, and while being a metaphor for social change in which science and art are fused.  As a result, Baroque fruits symbolize the finite nature of life, suggesting the end of the previous era and the opening of a new era through the convergence of art and technology with the life and aesthetics of fruit.

Today when the convergence of technology and art is needed more than ever, IMJ FOUNDATION's project aims to realize, develop, and disseminate technology concretely and present a more sustainable methodology for future development by enabling the convergence through human networking based on a humanistic perspective and delivering it to people through aesthetic experiences.

Through This…

This concept does is not simply aimed as creating something that is nice to look at but enables the agreement and cooperation of the art market in the technology field, enabling broader corporate networking. In addition, by referring to clear nouns such as baroque and fruit, it is possible to present specific inspirational points to artists. In terms of marketing, the project aims to induce multi-genre art cooperation and have a maximum impact on the global distribution and marketing of programs by adopting baroque's style which has had the widest influences on arts and culture while being the most glamorous. In addition, by presenting technology-oriented results that are difficult to approach to the public in a more public-friendly manner, it enables rapid dissemination of technology and consequently sustainable technological development.
